Bio / CV

Maho Donowaki (b.1994, Japan) is an interdisciplinary artist based in New York. She often uses food and familiar objects, combined with elements of animism, to create narratives inspired by her daily encounters with "sad-looking" objects. Her work explores themes of body autonomy and hierarchy, examining the line between control and erasure.
She received her BFA from Tama Art University in Tokyo, and graduates later this year from the MFA Fine Arts program at the School of Visual Arts. Group exhibitions include "The Symbolists: Les Fleurs du mal" (Hesse Flatow, New York, 2021), “The Hitchhiker's Guide to Staying Afloat" (Tutu Gallery, Brooklyn/online, 2020), and “& a pause, & a rose" (CP Project Space, New York, 2019).
Her work was featured in the inaugural issue of OyeDrum Magazine, and mentioned in The Brooklyn Rail.
She currently lives and works in New York.
